  • It is one of the International Digital Radio Standard

  • It was initially developed by CEPT and later standardised by ETSI

  • CEPT stands for Conference of European Post and Telecommuncations

  • ETSI stands for European Telecom Standards Institute

  • CEPT put the name Groupe Speciale Mobile

  • Under ETSI,GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications

  • It operates in 900MHz and 1800 MHz (In USA 850MHz and 1900MHz)

  • The following are the components in a GSM System:

    Mobile Station (MS)
    Mobile Equipment (ME)
    Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)
    Base Station Subsystem (BSS)
    Base Transceiver Station (BTS)
    Base Station Controller (BSC)
    Network Switching Subsystem(NSS)
    Mobile Switching Center (MSC)
    Home Location Register (HLR)
    Visitor Location Register (VLR)
    Authentication Center (AUC)
    Equipment Identity Register (EIR)

    ----------------------------------------------
It is a 2G Mobile Technology
What is the meaning of 1G,2G,3G?
iG uses Analog transmission. eg. AMPS
2G and above are using Digital transmission.
Depending upon the data speeds, the generation varies

List of GSM related technolgies (approx values)
    GSM2G data speed 9.6kbps
GPRS2.5G data speed 150 kbps (practically 56 kbps)
    EDGE 2.5Gdata speed 384 kbps(but 100kbps uplink)
    UMTS/WCDMA 3Gdata speed 384 kbps bothways
    UMTSLTE 4G data speed 100mbps (50mbps uplink)

    List of CDMA related technolgies
    CDMA2G data speed 9.6kbps
    CDMA2001x-RTT2.5G data speed Upto 144kbps
    CDMA20001x-EVDO 3Gdata speed 2400 kbps(but 155kbps uplink)
    CDMA20001xRev.B4Gdata speed 73mbps/27mbps
    UMB 4G data speed 129mbps/75.6mbps

    Frequency details

    Carrier Separation : 200 Khz
No. of RF carriers : 124
    Access Method : TDMA/FDMA
    Modulation Method : GMSK
Modulation data rate : 270.833 Kbps

Equipments involved in an outgoing call

MS sends dialled digits to BSS
BSS sends dialled digits to MSC
MSC checks with VLR whether this MS is allowed for this service.
If yes ,MSC asks BSS to allocate resources for the call.
If the calling party belongs to some other network, then
MSC routes the call to GMSC.

    How Incoming call takes place

    HLR contacted
    Get MSRN from VLR
    Get status of MS
    Paging of MS
    MS Answers
    Security Checkings
    Connections Setup

3G phones can used for lot of applications like video,video-conferencing,
    games,Internet,email,pornography,etc,etc.3G stands for Games,Gambling,Girls(lol!)
